Every so often a website will take my blog posts and start publishing them. They make it look like I’m a guest writer for their site. (This happens to a lot of bloggers.)
No link, no traffic to my blog. Just using my name as a byline isn’t giving me credit, it’s making it look like I work for them.
That’s just theft of my copyrighted material.
Can I start publishing entire New York Times stories on my site for free, without asking? Even if I include the byline of the reporter? Of course not.
If you want to quote me, that’s great. If you want to use my content to grow your business, let’s work out a deal. I’d love to work with you.
Thanks,
Andy

Andy,
How do you find out/manner used to see if your content is being scraped, taken, hijacked, plagarized? I also have a blog and would like to check to see if my stuff is being stolen as well. Any info appreciated.
Copyright infringement is a serious problem for everyone who creates original work – creative writers, photographers, and bloggers.
The best website for info on ways to protect your work, as well as copyright law, is copyright.gov
There’s an art director who publishes a specific tips for creatives at
http://copyrightnews.wordpress.com/
Happens to me from time to time…Mike, I use Google Alerts based on my blog title, titles & name.
Andy, it’ll be fun to see if this post gets stolen.
Andy, what do you do when you find out that’s happened? Thanks.
I ask nicely and usually they apologize, take it down, or give me credit. Most folks don’t realize they are doing something wrong.
Thanks, as we know from the recent Cooks Source incident, there is a lot of ignorance out there about copyright and attribution.
Andy, what the best method in you opinion for using someone else’s material on your blog? What get the best results, whats allowed etc.
Thanks great post.
Just send a nice note to the author! Some will say yes, some will say no. When you ask, be sure to offer them full credit and lots of links back to their site.
Mike,
I use Google Alerts – I have on setup for my name, so get an email notification from Google when it shows up on other peoples’ websites.
