I have an aunt who still uses a microwave bought in the 1960s. It has mechanical controls and has never broken down, despite the variable voltage in India.
As for the designer of this console just stuff him/her (or as I suspect the team) into the oven and use the grill to raise them to 300 degrees. I am sure they will feel elevated.
