Blogs are your best search marketing investment

Before you spend a nickel on search marketing, try assigning one employee to blog 2-3 paragraphs of good advice every day.  You'll get great search placement — and priceless credibility. Even better, search links stop when you stop paying. Links to your blog are a permanent promotion.  Remember, if it stops when you stop paying, it's advertising. If it keeps going, it's word of mouth marketing.

Results are typical – why do you think more than a few of the top 10 search results for "word of mouth marketing" point to something I do?

Totally agree. In addition to search marketing, you enter into a conversation with customers.

Traffic to our website increased by 20% after we launched our blog micro-site. New visitors to our site accounted for nearly 90% of that growth – and they first found us via our blog site.

This is exactly the reason most of my sites are primarily blog-based. With a previous blog where I reported on news my posts would be indexed and ranked highly within a couple of hours (and sometimes minutes) of being published. Often I’d outrank the original source of the news which I found quite amazing.

We’ve had similar results with our sites increase in traffic, but something we didn’t expect was a change in the type of clients contacting us. People seem to have more respect for our services and what we can do for them. Specially in the initial consultation. For a design company I feel a blog helps to show the clients that we’re not just about creating great design, it’s about helping their business. Of course someone else could have a different opinion.

Great point Andy. Search is a volume based business. Blogging is perfect for search because of frequency and recency vs. a traditional site strategy. Bloggers need to know their keywords, title their blogs to target those keywords and write the content that searchers are telling them they want.
Organizations need to rethink traffic flow from site to blog vs. the new paradigm of Blog(s) to site. Successful companies free their employees to tell their stories in an environment where they can scale to have a real and meaningful impact on the business.
You not only increase your search traffic, you increase your engagement and conversions.
