How the web works

March 19, 2008

If you want to know how the web works, why it often doesn’t, and what causes software to make you insane:

1. Read this very important post from Joel Spolsky: Martian Headsets.

2. Buy the most important book ever written on web design (which is actually for web people and regular people): Designing with Web Standards by Jeffrey Zeldman

These are sort of technical, but quite readable and fun. If you are in any form of web-related business, you need to read them.

(Thanks for the link, Guy.)

There are a lot of variations in correct web design and usage. Web standards, are not one of them. Recent studies show that people are able to understand information much different now, than they were able to 5-8 years ago. This is called visual learning. Meaning, monkey see, monkey do… But web. I see a design, without actually copying any of it, I am able to re-create it. Visually learning how to create an object, which has almost never been seen before without some sort of tutorial. What also helps? Grid layout, mathematically styling your Web site to form a grid. Why is this important? In the 1800’s an Italian man by the name of Leonardo Fibonacci created the “Golden Rule” which was the standard of all mental things. He figured that certain numbers represented the way the human mind understands information. By simplifying the web, and understanding the users mind, you can deliver information to them in a manner they don’t even realize.
I could go further, but I don’t want to suck up all the comment area.
