Starbucks is closing for 3 hours tonight.

Dunkin’ Donuts is giving away free coffee.

An amazing word of mouth opportunity.

What would you do? Comment below.

From the Chicago Tribune:

On Tuesday, Starbucks plans to close almost all of its 7,100 stores between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. for an unprecedented education and training session for its employees. The event, according to Transformation Agenda Communication #6, "signals the company’s focus on transforming the Starbucks experience" for both its customers and workers.

Coincidentally, Dunkin’ Donuts has planned a special promotion offering free small lattes, cappuccinos or espressos at all 450 Chicago-market locations from 1 to 10 p.m. to overlap with the event.

As much as I adore Starbucks – someone was thinking there.

Once Howard Schultz lowered his price to compete with McDonald’s he lost me as a Starbuck’s customer. See my post here:

Howard is the master at getting the most promotional bang for his buck. Closing all stores for 3 hours got unprecedented world wide news coverage. Every news man, morning show, man on the street (even Dunkin Donuts) was talking Starbucks: first when he made the announcement weeks ago, then an entire day (yesterday)and now all the follow up. And what was the talk about? How they are training their crew to provide a better experience. What a great positive message to spread. And what did it cost to close the stores for 3 hours “out of prime time”? Very little in comparison to the promotional trade off. Not only that, he hopefully got 3 hours of some good training in ta-boot. And to his employees, peers and stockholders, Howard said he is serious about making Starbucks better. A very successful day I’d say.

Funny little story-
Our local Starbucks kicked out all the customers at 5:30 without so much as a discount card for future coffee in order to “improve service.”
Someone needs to create a comic illustrating this.
