Why do people comment on a blog?

image Every so often I post something silly, like this video of me teaching "How to make great eggs in 2 min".

It's one of the post popular posts ever on this blog ... and certainly the least important.  I get the same great response every time I post about food.

My friend Peter Waldheim suggest that

Maybe people feel more comfortable posting about something fun, where they don't feel the same ease commenting on a more serious topic.

There are lots of readers of blogs who like what they read and want to contribute, but don't know how.  Fun posts open the door to broader participation.

Lesson: Lower the bar to involvement and start welcoming casual conversation.

I think you friend has half of the truth, i.e. it's tougher to comment on a serious topic. The other half involves what's in it for the commenter. You'll certainly have more fun in commenting on a fun subject. You may even end up in a dialogue with other fun people. In other words, the rewards are greater.

Well, food is always interesting. I have to confess. I don't know how to cook. However, I do find myself commenting when an entry is about food or has mentioned food somewhere. I think your friend is right. At the same time, a lot of people find quirky stuff interesting and may have their own quirky experiences to contribute. Blogs are a lot more fun that way.
