Free popcorn

September 23, 2007

Popcorn
Last time we went to the movies they were handing out empty popcorn bags.  You could just go to the snack bar and get a free popcorn.

I started telling my (very smart) wife, "What a great word of mouth promotion. Everyone will tell their friends that this is the theater that has free popcorn nights!"

But as we stood in the 10-deep lines to get our free popcorn, she said, "It’s not about word of mouth.  It’s a fantastic way to sell $4 sodas."

Ah, the optimist vs the cynic. But, luckily, you’re both right! Perhaps the company does the free popcorn because they see an upturn in soda sales–but regardless, it’s still something people talk about. So, I think it’s a win/win situation.
The only bad thing about this is that now I want popcorn too. Where is that theater again? ;-)
